We made it to Rome and the sun is shining!

Friday - November 5, 2010

EC and I left home on Wednesday and noon and today at noon we arrived in Rome.  We congratulated ourselves on our wisdom to not attempt driving - we arrived sleep deprived, and sat with our suit cases plastered against our green doors (of our rented flat) waiting for "Gennaro" to come and let us in and introduce us to the flat.  He forgot his cell phone (or lost it or something) so we waited, and waited, and were amazed that cars (very small ones) speed down the super narrow streets that full of pedestrians, scooters, parked cars and tables and chairs!  No one blows their horn - but ambulances buzz along also - not sure where they are going, but it must be to a traffic accident!

EC was glad to see that there was a Gelato for sale right next to our green doors, so she tried a Coconut Gelato - a great welcome to Italy!

Gennaro finally arrived, and we were let into our beautiful green doors off the busy street, up two 1/2 flights of stairs (which are uneven by the way) and let into our flat.   We were amazed, it is exactly what we thought and had seen from the pictures, only in miniature!  Seriously only ONE person can be in the kitchen - but it has two bedrooms and two baths so we set to unpacking (EC let me pick which bedroom I wanted - she is so good to me!), showered, and then HAD to walk the one block over to see Piazza Navona ~ one of the oldest, largest, and best maintained Piazza's.
Cold cuts anyone?
We found the local supermarket (2 blocks up the street) and were amazed that it kept going and going and going.  Of course EC was worried about fire exits while I was trying to read the labels on the wine bottles!  There are no fire exits, and I gave up on the wine!  But the meat counter was VERY impressive!

We then tried to get a bite to eat, figuring that we would retire EARLY EARLY EARLY - only to be told "CLOSED"  apparently restaurants close from 4-6pm - so we came back to the flat to let everyone know that we had arrived, and post to our blog.  SO we are OFF AGAIN in search of a pizza!  Rome is beautiful - sunny and warm - great great fun!
